Germany

Germany – a bike friendly country with lots of cycle paths. And where cyclists have to share the road, the motorists respect the cyclists.

On my Helsinki to England cycle tour, I cycled off the ferry from Denmark, into Germany at Puttgarden on Fehmarn Island. I headed east around the island coast to join mainland Germany over the Fehmarn bridge. Once over the bridge I again cycled on quiet roads to the coast until Neustadt where I cycled west across the country to Gluckstadt. This is where I used the short ferry crossing the Rhine to avoid the congestion of Hamburg. A long queue of vehicles with the same idea as us waited for the ferry but we pedalled to the front of the queue and straight onto the ferry.

From Gluckstadt, I had to two choices, the coastal route to the Netherlands, or across Germany in a south westerly direction. I had cycled the coast virtually all the way from Gdansk in Poland so I chose the inland route through Bremen, Osnabruk and Munster. I was glad I did, cycling through beautiful forests, with great camping.

I have made a ‘Promise on Sustainability’ so I am very conscious of the environment. I mainly travel by bicycle and I try not to buy single use plastics. Unfortunately I sometimes have to travel on a ferry or airline to cross a sea, ocean, or a country where I cannot get a visa or dogs aren’t allowed.

If you see me on the road or in a city I am usually pleased to have a selfie with you. I love cuddles and gentle petting. Just shout, “Sprout, Sprout, Travelling Sprout”.

In 2020, I am cycling from Amsterdam to Lapland travelling through Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Norway. I will be looking for Santa so if you see him, please tell me where you saw him!

In September I am going to cycle tour the Karakorum Highway from Islamabad to the Chinese border and then back to Lahore. I will be flying from Amsterdam to Islamabad with Turkish Air as the flight has a short stop over in Istanbul. This will give me chance to stretch my legs before the 5 hour flight onwards to the Pakistan capital.

Keep a look out for me.

Go to the shop on this website where a small range of Travelling Sprout toys are available to purchase pre -order only at the moment.
