Estonia

Estonia

I arrived early in the morning at the port of Tallin. I had taken the overnight ferry from Helsinki, sleeping in a pet friendly cabin. After a quick cycle around the capital city, a UNESCO site, I cycled east along the coast road, surrounded by forests to camp on the beach at Paldiski.

The following morning, after a very peaceful night, I continued on sandy roads through the forest, then rejoined the tarmac road in the direction of Haapsalu where the ferry port would take me to Hiiumaa Island. We cycled around the whole island, wild camping, to our destination, the ferry at Parna to cross the Soela Strait to Saaremaa Island. After exporing the northern part of Saaremaa I arrived at the port at Kuivastu on Muhu Island to get back to mainland at Virtsu, Estonia.

Again I hugged the coast finding quiet roads to Parnu, and then onwards to Riga in Latvia.

My memories of Estonia are mosquitos, forests, sun, and quiet roads. I will be back.

Was is ok to take dogs on the ferry to the islands off Estonia? I will be travelling with my 10kg Spaniel in a trailer behind my bike. I am cycling from Berlin to Tallin this summer.

Yes, the ferries were very dog friendly. There were designated pet areas on the ferry, even in the cafeteria. Good luck with your cycle tour, will you be blogging about your journey? Sprout x

I have made a ‘Promise on Sustainability’ so I am very conscious of the environment. I mainly travel by bicycle and I try not to buy single use plastics. Unfortunately I sometimes have to travel on a ferry or airline to cross a sea, ocean, or a country where I cannot get a visa or dogs aren’t allowed.

If you see me on the road or in a city I am usually pleased to have a selfie with you. I love cuddles and gentle petting. Just shout, “Sprout, Sprout, Travelling Sprout”.

In 2020, I am cycling from Amsterdam to Lapland travelling through Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Norway. I will be looking for Santa so if you see him, please tell me where you saw him!

In September I am going to cycle tour the Karakorum Highway from Islamabad to the Chinese border and then back to Lahore. I will be flying from Amsterdam to Islamabad with Turkish Air as the flight has a short stop over in Istanbul. This will give me chance to stretch my legs before the 5 hour flight onwards to the Pakistan capital.

Keep a look out for me.
